Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program
Louisiana uses a Graduated Driver Licensing system to help young drivers gain experience safely:
-
Learner’s Permit – Issued after completing driver education and passing the OMV knowledge exam. Teens must drive with a licensed adult in the car until they meet age and practice requirements.
 -
Intermediate License – At age 16, after holding the learner’s permit for at least 180 days and completing required practice hours, teens may drive alone with some restrictions (such as nighttime limits and passenger restrictions).
 -
Full License – At age 17, teens may apply for a full, unrestricted driver’s license if all requirements are met.

* Parents must pick up teens on time after every class/lesson. If the teen is not picked up on time, the teen schedule may be changed.
