Adult Driver Requirements (18 and Older)
Step 1 – Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP Card)
Before beginning any course, adults must obtain a Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP Card) from the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV).
-
The TIP Card is required to attend class and behind-the-wheel lessons.
-
To apply, bring required documents (proof of identity, residency, and social security) and fees to the OMV.
-
Step 2 – The 14-Hour Adult Pre-Licensing Course
All first-time drivers age 18+ must complete a 14-hour course, which includes:
-
6 Hours of Classroom Instruction
-
Covers Louisiana traffic laws, safe driving techniques, alcohol/drug awareness, defensive driving, and road sign recognition.
-
At the end of the class, students take the OMV Written Knowledge Test. This test is required before moving on to behind-the-wheel training.
-
-
8 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Training
-
Scheduled in multiple driving sessions.
-
Provides hands-on experience in real traffic situations, including residential, highway, and night driving.
-
Will take 5 to 6 weeks to complete.

Step 3 – Road Skills Test
After completing the 14-hour course, students are eligible to schedule the Road Skills Test with an OMV-approved driving school.
-
This practical exam evaluates the driver’s ability to safely operate a vehicle.
-
At 504 Driving Academy, students may schedule the road test immediately after their last behind-the-wheel lesson.
Pricing Notes
-
The full 14-Hour Adult Course at 504 Driving Academy includes the 6-hour classroom + 8-hour behind-the-wheel training.
